Metallica sono un gruppo speed/thrash metal statunitense, formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1981. I loro primi lavori, grazie alla velocità dei pezzi, tecnicismi strumentali ed aggressività, li hanno portati ad entrare nei "big four" del thrash metal, accanto a Slayer,Megadeth ed Anthrax.

La band si è guadagnata in poco tempo un crescente seguito di fan e, con l'uscita di Master of Puppets nel 1986, ha raggiunto secondo molti l'apice della carriera. Il successo commerciale è poi arrivato nel 1991 con l'album Metallica, che ha esordito al numero uno della classifica Billboard 200. The Big 4 Arrivano in italia (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth e Anthrax)

Per la prima volta arrivano in Italia The Big 4: i "quattro grandi" della Bay Area. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth e Anthrax saranno infatti protagonisti a luglio di un'unica data che li vedrà esibirsi sullo stesso palco.

Il 6 luglio all'Arena Fiera di Milano (Rho) si svolgerà la giornata di grande musica attesa da tantissimi fans italiani. L'apertura delle porte è prevista per le ore 14.30, mentre i concerti inizieranno due ore più tardi, alle 16.30.

Durante il Sonisphere Festival dello scorso anno, il 16 giugno a Varsavia, ha esordito la formula The Big 4 che ha debuttato di fronte ad un pubblico composto da 500.000 fans arrivati da tutta l'Europa per assistere all'evento, da molti considerato come il più significativo nella storia dell'heavy metal.

L'evento che si è poi svolto il 22 giugno al Vasil Levski National Stadium a Sofia, in Bulgaria, è stato ripreso dal regista Nick Wickham e trasmesso via satellite in oltre 450 cinema statunitensi e 350 sale in Europa, Canada e America Latina. Un cofanetto che comprende i quattro concerti in formato Dvd o Blu Ray è stato successivamente messo in vendita con contenuti speciali tra cui interviste e dietro le quinte, ed è stata realizzata anche una versione da collezione che comprende cinque cd, un libro, poster, foto e un plettro.

Secondo Chad Channing, batterista dei Nirvana ai tempi di Bleach, Cobain non aveva un titolo da dare alla canzone quando la portò in studio. Quando gli chiese cosa riguardasse, Cobain rispose "It's about a girl" ("Riguarda una ragazza"). La ragazza in questione era Tracy Marander, l'allora ragazza di Cobain, con cui viveva in quei tempi. Tracy aveva chiesto a Cobain perché non avesse mai scritto una canzone per lei, e Cobain rispose con "About a girl". La canzone era rivolta alla difficile relazione della coppia, causata dal rifiuto di Cobain di trovare un lavoro, o di condividere spese per la pulizia al loro appartamento (dove c'erano molti animali domestici). I System of a Down (talvolta abbreviato semplicemente in S.O.A.D.) sono un gruppo alternative metal statunitense, formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1995.

I componenti sono tutti originari dell'Armenia, e discendono dai superstiti del genocidio subito dal loro popolo, di cui parlano in molte canzoni. In particolare il nonno di Serj Tankianè un superstite del genocidio, che il frontman della band intervista nel documentario "Screamers". Nonostante l'origine comune dei quattro membri del gruppo, solo il bassista Shavo Odadjian è nato in Armenia, il 22 aprile 1974 a Yerevan, capitale del piccolo Stato transcaucasico.

Si fanno notare per le numerose influenze stilistiche, ma anche per l'impegno sociale e politico. Insieme al chitarrista Tom Morello guidano l'organizzazione non profit Axis of Justice, che riunisce associazioni politiche, fans e musicisti di varia estrazione per difendere la giustizia sociale. Hanno venduto più di 20 milioni di dischi, di cui quasi la metà nei soli Stati Uniti.

Dal 2006 al 2010 la band non è più stata attiva e se ne è più volte vociferato lo scioglimento, ma tornerà sulle scene con un tour estivo nel 2011.

La canzone è una delle più famose del gruppo, ed è stata composta da Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian e Serj Tankian. Nello stesso anno di pubblicazione del singolo è stato anche girato un video musicale, diretto dal bassista Shavo Odadjian. Per la sua realizzazione sono state ingaggiate persone comuni o di strada. Il video, ambientato a Los Angeles, vede Malakian vestire una maglietta da hockey dei Los Angeles Kings con il suo nome inciso sopra.

Fuel è il titolo di una canzone dei Metallica. Si tratta del terzo singolo estratto dal loro settimo album in studio, Re-Load (1997).

Canzone

Parla del brivido che si prova nella guida veloce e nelle sfide automobilistiche. Un’altra interpretazione del brano, che riflette i problemi personali dei Metallica e dello stile dei loro testi dopo il Black Album, suggerisce che le liriche trattino della dipendenza. Nella fattispecie potrebbero essere i problemi di Hetfield con l’alcol, ma anche altri più generici e comunque con un minimo denominatore comune, cioè essere considerati “carburanti” per le persone.

Curiosità

Il video di Fuel è stato utilizzato da Gregory House in Dr. House, riprodotto su un portatile per diagnosticare a una paziente dei problemi di coordinazione di movimenti.

Fuel è stata anche coverizzata da Avril Lavigne nel 2003, nell’edizione di MTV Icon dedicata ai Metallica

Il 24 maggio 2010, in una stanza d'albergo nell'Iowa, è stato rinvenuto il cadavere del bassista degli Slikpnot e co-fondatore del gruppo nel 1992, Paul Gray. Esami approfonditi hanno rivelato che il bassista è morto per un'overdose di morfina e di fentany.

Il gruppo ha commemorato il compagno deceduto con una conferenza stampa alla quale i componenti si sono presentati senza maschera, in segno di rispetto al defunto Paul. Di recente hanno annunciato che a luglio 2011 uscirà un album dedicato al loro compagno deceduto.

Caratteristiche

Paul suonava con la mano sinistra e tendeva a usare il plettro anche se nelle canzoni Wait and Bleed e Purity suonava con le dita.

La tuta di Gray era contrassegnata con il numero 2 e la sua ultima maschera (tra il 1998 e il 2001 ne aveva una raffigurante un maiale, che simbolicamente rappresentava il suo animo molto indulgente e permissivo) si ispirava a quella del serial killer Hannibal Lecter

Ha raggiunto la prima posizione della Modern Rock Tracks, rimanendo in testa per tre settimane consecutive e stando così per molto tempo tra le Top 5 nel Regno Unito.

Canzone

Cobain dichiarò che la canzone era ispirata dallo scritto "Camille's vaginal flower theory", riferendosi alla critica americana, Camille Paglia, di cui egli è stato un fan. Nel 1990, nel libro della Paglia, "Sexual Personae", la scrittrice esplora la prevalenza del pensiero, che i genitali femminili vengono percepiti come ferite, spesso si manifesta in un fiore malato immaginario, nella letteratura psicoanalitica. Lei cita le malattie dei fiori, come William Blake nello scritto "The Sick Rose", con la citazione "velenosi genitali fiori", anche Joris-Karl Huysmans parlerà di questo argomento, nella À rebours, e una descrizione di Tennessee Williams, che confronta una vagina a "un'orchidea". Infatti in "Heart-Shaped Box", Cobain canta che: "proprio adesso le orchidee carnivore non perdonano nessuno".

La Canzone

Secondo la biografia dei Nirvana scritta da Michael Azerrad la canzone fa riferimento a una ragazza americana di 12 anni che, dopo un concerto punk-rock, fu rapita da un pedofilo che la torturò e la stuprò per diversi mesi. Lei riuscì a convincere il pedofilo che quello che lui faceva le piaceva, ottenendo così la sua fiducia. Poi, quando erano fermi ad un autogrill, il pedofilo lasciò la porta del furgone aperta e lei scappò. "Polly" è scritta dal punto di vista del criminale, e gioca anche sul fatto che Kurt Cobain avesse un pappagallo di nome Polly ("Polly wants a cracker" è un verso del pezzo).

I Nirvana sono stati un gruppo grunge statunitense formatosi ad Aberdeen (Washington) nel1987 e attivo sino al 1994, anno della morte del leader Kurt Cobain. Principali artefici del successo del genere grunge e in generale dell'alternative rock, furono una delle band più innovatrici, note ed influenti nella musica dei primi anni novanta. Fondatori e membri del gruppo sin dall'esordio furono Kurt Cobain (voce e chitarra) e il bassista Krist Novoselic. Vari batteristi hanno invece militato nel gruppo, tra i quali il primo di rilevante importanza fu Chad Channing, con cui il gruppo registrò l'album d'esordio Bleach (1989) e il successivo demo di Butch Vig, che portò i Nirvana all'attenzione delle major. Channing venne successivamente sostituito a causa della scarsa potenza sonora e della vacillante solidità ritmica. La formazione definitiva fu raggiunta verso la fine del 1990, quando Dave Grohl, ex batterista degli Scream, si unì al gruppo.

La morte di Kurt Cobain

Nelle prime settimane del 1994 i Nirvana iniziano un nuovo tour europeo, che viene però sospeso dopo che il 1 marzo a Monaco di Baviera a Cobain furono diagnosticate una bronchite ed una forte laringite. Per questo motivo il concerto del 2 marzo, che si dovrebbe tenere proprio a Monaco, viene cancellato. A Roma, la mattina del 4 marzo, Courtney Love trova il marito privo di coscienza nella propria camera d'albergo. Il cantante dei Nirvana viene immediatamente trasportato all'ospedale, dove si scopre che l'incoscienza era il risultato di una combinazione di Rohypnol, medicina che gli era stata prescritta, ed alcolici. Tutte le rimanenti date del tour vengono cancellate, incluse alcune nel Regno Unito.

Nelle settimane successive, Cobain ricade nella dipendenza dall'eroina, acconsentendo a seguire un programma di riabilitazione in un centro specializzato. Dopo meno di una settimana passata nel centro, Cobain salta il muro di cinta e torna a Seattle in aereo. Una settimana dopo, l'8 aprile 1994, il corpo di Cobain viene trovato senza vita nella sua casa di Seattle, con un colpo di arma da fuoco in testa, causando l'immediato scioglimento della band.
